The Dental Health Club, in partnership with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, proudly opened its doors for a community walk-in clinic – a completely free, open-to-all mouth cancer screening event. The initiative aimed to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and provide our community with accessible, potentially lifesaving oral health checks. Our dedicated team, who generously gave up their free time to support this important cause, were delighted to welcome both new and familiar faces. They provided quick, professional checks aimed at identifying the early signs of oral cancer and ensuring everyone felt informed and cared for.
The atmosphere throughout the day was warm, welcoming, and full of positive conversations about dental health and early prevention. We are committed to supporting our community, and providing free access to essential screenings is one of the ways we put that commitment into action.
Mouth Cancer in the UK: The Statistics Everyone Should Know
Raising awareness is just as important as carrying out the screenings themselves. Mouth cancer is a growing concern in the UK, and understanding the facts can help people make informed health decisions:
- Over 10,800 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer each year in the UK.
- The number of cases has more than doubled in the last 20 years.
- One person every hour is lost to mouth cancer in the UK.
- Early detection increases survival rates from 50% to 90% — a dramatic difference that highlights why regular checks are vital.
Mouth cancer is often diagnosed late, which significantly reduces the chance of successful treatment. That’s why community initiatives like our free screening day are so important.
Early Detection Saves Lives
Mouth cancer is on the rise, but the message is clear: when spotted early, survival rates improve dramatically.
Our free screening event offered visitors a fast, confidential and professional mouth check, carried out by experienced dental clinicians. These simple screenings can help detect early warning signs such as ulcers, lumps, red or white patches, or other unusual changes inside the mouth.
The earlier these changes are found, the better the chances of successful treatment. It truly can be life-saving.
Risk Factors for Mouth Cancer
While anyone can develop mouth cancer, certain factors significantly increase the risk. Understanding these can help you make informed lifestyle choices and recognise when screening is especially important.
Common Risk Factors Include:
- Smoking, vaping, or chewing tobacco
- Regular or excessive alcohol use
- HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection
- Being over 50 years old or male
- Limited access to regular dental care, meaning early warning signs may be missed
If you fall into one or more of these categories, routine mouth cancer screenings are strongly recommended.
